The kids were super focused and well behaved! I accredit it to our phenomenal teaching skills…but really it was probably just because they were so focused on trying to figure out what we were saying to them in English. Their woodwind specialist is sick with the flu, so we were happy to help out so the kids wouldn’t miss another week of lessons! Laura and I had Fika and planned out how we would teach the upcoming grade 3-5 clarinet and alto sax lessons. Well, today was a day of firsts! At Ersang it is our busy day (we get done at 4 pm). We watched the Swedish news before going to bed, and I was so happy to see Donald Trump mentioned and interviewed a few times…what a great reminder of home…

Here are some pictures of Malmo to get you as pumped as I am: I am still so grateful and ecstatic that I will be traveling there in only a few days! I heard back from Mona, the woman I will be staying with in Malmo this weekend, and she wants me to come to a school Thursday afternoon in her town to teach music! I am very excited to have this experience in the very south of Sweden- perhaps the classes will differ than in the north? Our weekend plans consist of exploring Copenhagen. Laura and I worked on our Prezi for school, and it is really coming along! For dinner we had Swedish meatballs (for the first time for me!), my “famous” sauteed onions/cabbage in soy sauce, falafal, and potatoes au gratin. I bought Lord of the Rings in Swedish as requested by my friend Beth, and also 2 famous children’s books with traditional Swedish songs. Despite the fact that it was raining, Laura and I took the bus to the centrum and walked to a bookstore.

I worked with the clarinets to help them tongue their pitches, and we worked on putting and taking apart the mouthpiece.Ĭlass ended at 2 today, which is very early. Many people are divided on if the refugees should be allowed into Sweden.Īfter Fika, we went to Malin’s for 2 2nd grade band lessons. However, because of the growing amount of refugees, racism that hasn’t been seen in a long time is coming back refugee camps are being burned, and so now the locations of the camps are secret. Many come from Syria, Iran, Somalia, etc. They must prove their lives are in danger, though. Because of this, there is a lot of regret from Sweden, and so as the refugee movement in Europe began throughout the last few decades, Sweden has been very open to letting refugees into their country. They claimed they were neutral, but they did help Germany in several ways.

During WWII, Sweden aided the Nazis a bit by supplying them with weapons, and letting them pass through to get to both Norway and Finland. I walked around and helped correct horrendous fingers being used for chords.Īfter Pelle’s classes, we had Fika and Pelle told me more about the refugee situation in Sweden. Then, they moved on to piano and did the chords. Eventually, the spaces and repetition between notes was shortened, and eventually they did it all with no breaks. He had them start by strumming C 8 times, then pausing for them to find D, then they did D 8 times and so on. Kids grabbed guitars, and they learned the bass guitar part: C C C CD D DD D D D D DE E EE EĪfter they had mastered that, Pelle spent a while getting the kid’s hands and fingers used to changing between C, D, G, and Em chords. Then, Pelle would give them a brief synopsis of the song- how the artist woke up and wrote the lyrics in 20 minutes, and it took them a year to finally find the perfect rhythmic component for the piece (the syncopated strings). They began their lesson watching the music video for Viva La Vida by Coldplay. Today we observed and helped out in 3 6th grade lessons. Every day the #1 bus arrives at the stop (I am on it), I see my #8 bus begin to drive off, but today it was late so I made it on the early one! Success! For the first time, I made it onto my transfer bus by sprinting across the road and up the block to make it on.
